Could Not Locate the File Winspool.dll

When attempting to launch Carmen Sandiego Word Detective™ (School Edition), the following message appears: "Could not locate the file winspool.dll." This message occurs when attempting to launch Carmen Sandiego Word Detective™ (School Edition) in Windows® 2000 or Windows® XP. Renaming the WINSPOOL.DRV file will help to identify the source of this issue. Consult with the remainder of this technical note for more information and the procedure.
Follow the procedure below for the operating system in use. Choose one of the following:
NOTE: The resolution below for Windows® 2000/XP uses a compatibility mode option which is not available in Windows NT®. As a result, Carmen Sandiego Word Detective™ (School Edition) is not supported on Windows NT®.
Windows® XP
Windows® 2000
Windows® XP
- Close all programs and windows and return to the desktop.
- Click Start and select My Computer. The My Computer window will open.
- Click Tools on the menu bar and select Folder Options. The Folder Options window will open.
- Click the View tab.
- Locate the "Hidden files and folders" folder under the Advanced Settings: section and select "Show hidden files and folders."
- Verify that the box to the left of "Hide extensions for known file types" is not checked. (If it is checked, click once in the box to remove the checkmark.)
- Click Apply and click OK.
- Double-click the C: drive icon.
- Double-click the Windows folder.
- Double-click the System folder. Do not click the System32 folder.
- Locate the WINSPOOL.DRV file and click on it once to select it.
- Click Edit in the menu bar and choose Copy.
- Click Edit in the menu bar and choose Paste. A file named “Copy of WINSPOOL.DRV” will appear.
- Right-click the Copy of WINSPOOL.DRV file and choose Rename from the menu that appears.
- Type WINSPOOL.DLL and tap ENTER on the keyboard.
- After renaming the WINSPOOL.DRV file to WINSPOOL.DLL, close all windows and return to the desktop.
- Click Start, select All Programs and choose Broderbund Software.
- Right-click on the Carmen Sandiego Word Detective™ (School Edition) icon and left-click Properties from the menu that appears. The Carmen Sandiego Word Detective™ (School Edition) Shortcut Properties window will open.
- Click the Compatibility tab.
NOTE: In some instances, the following message may appear: "The folder $Install_ToDirectory specified in the Start in box is not valid. Make sure that the folder exists and that the path is correct."
If the message appears, enter the directory that identifies where the program is installed. After entering the correct directory location in the Start in box, click the Compatibility tab and continue with the next step.
- Verify that the box to the right of "Run this program in compatibility mode for" is checked. If it is not checked, click once in the empty box to check it.
- Select Windows 95 from the drop-down menu.
- Check the box to the right of "Run in 256 colors" by clicking once in the empty box.
- Click Apply and click OK.
- Launch Carmen Sandiego Word Detective™ (School Edition).
Windows® 2000
- Close all programs and windows and return to the desktop.
- Click Start and select My Computer. The My Computer window will open.
- Click Tools on the menu bar and select Folder Options. The Folder Options window will open.
- Click the View tab.
- Locate the "Hidden files and folders" folder under the Advanced Settings: section and select "Show hidden files and folders."
- Verify that the box to the left of "Hide extensions for known file types" is not checked. (If it is checked, click once in the box to remove the checkmark.)
- Click Apply and click OK.
- Double-click the C: drive icon.
- Double-click the WINNT folder.
- Double-click the System folder. Do not click the System32 folder.
- Locate the WINSPOOL.DRV file and click on it once to select it.
- Click Edit in the menu bar and choose Copy.
- Click Edit in the menu bar and choose Paste. A file named “Copy of WINSPOOL.DRV” will appear.
- Right-click the Copy of WINSPOOL.DRV file and choose Rename from the menu that appears.
- Type WINSPOOL.DLL and tap ENTER on the keyboard.
- After renaming the WINSPOOL.DRV file to WINSPOOL.DLL, close all windows and return to the desktop.
- Click Start, select All Programs and choose Broderbund Software.
- Right-click Carmen Sandiego Word Detective™ (School Edition) and left-click Properties from the menu that appears. The Carmen Sandiego Word Detective™ (School Edition) Shortcut Properties will open.
- Click the Compatibility tab located at the top. If the Compatibility tab is not present, it must be enabled before continuing. Click or navigate to http://www.microsoft.com/ and search for article #279792 for information that describes how to enable the Compatibility Mode in Windows® 2000.
